Two systems, same outcome

Dim light and cannabis act on your sensory experience through completely different mechanisms. One is environmental, one is pharmacological. But they converge on the same target: sensory gating.

Sensory gating is the brain's filtering process — the mechanism by which it decides what incoming sensory information to suppress and what to let through. It's a resource management system. What the research shows on THC and sensory perception

Mechanism

THC disrupts sensory gating by altering theta-band neural oscillations — the brain rhythms that coordinate filtering activity in the hippocampus and thalamus. Why dim light specifically compounds this

In a bright room, your visual cortex is dominant. It's consuming processing resources, maintaining spatial awareness, tracking movement and light sources. Cannabis reduces filtering — but the visual system, still heavily loaded, competes with the expanded auditory and tactile signal for the brain's attention.

The caveat — and why it still supports dim light
